Life Extension Carnosine 500mg provides carnosine to help protect muscle cell membranes including supporting efficient heart muscle function. It has also shown to help with healthy ageing by stabilizing proteins which are the basic building block of tissues and other important body systems.
Carnosine is a multifunctional dipeptide made up of the amino acids beta-alanine and L-histidine. It is found both in food and in the human body, with carnosine levels declining with ageing. Long-lived cells such as nerve cells (neurons) and muscle cells (myocytes) contain high levels of carnosine. Muscle levels of carnosine correlate with the maximum life spans of animals. Carnosine has potent antioxidant properties and has been shown to support balancing a process which leads to damage of proteins within body tissues and contributes to ageing. In its function as an antioxidant it also protects muscle cell membranes from oxidation which happens under acidic conditions, for example during or after exercise and muscle exertion. Not only that, but carnosine may also help the heart muscle to contract more efficiently, through balancing calcium response in muscle cells of the heart.
