What is D-Ribose?
D-ribose forms the structural core, ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate). ATP is the chief energy source for our muscles during physical activity and the primary source of energy for our heart. Every cell in our body makes ribose to contribute to ATP production. Ribose is used in the production of ATP. ATP is like fuel for our cells and provides us with the energy to run our bodies. If you’re doing something strenuous that requires a lot of exertion, you’ll use a lot of ATP. And as you wait for your body to create more ATP, you will be in a recovery mode and may feel sluggish, stiff or uncomfortable even after you’ve rested for a while.
Human cells normally produce their own ribose to contribute to ATP production, but stressful states can interfere with the supply of ribose. In the body’s skeletal muscles, ribose can enhance the rate of ATP replacement after its depletion by intense exercise. The repetitive muscular contractions during bouts of strenuous exercise can temporarily lower ATP in skeletal muscle.
Heart muscle is not well equipped with enzymes that readily facilitate production of high-energy molecules so supplementing with ribose has shown to support the heart’s energy metabolism and its functional performance.
