What does Sugar Free mean?
Products that are considered to be sugar free do not contain any added sugars and contain less than 0.5g of total sugar per serve. This equates to the amount of natural sugars contained in one raw egg yolk.
‘Free sugar’ is the sugar that is added to foods for flavour by the manufacturer plus sugars that are naturally present in honey, syrups and fruit juices. It does not include the sugar that is intrinsically found in natural whole foods like whole fruit and vegetables, and non-processed dairy products.
Sugar is a carbohydrate and so provides us with energy when consumed. It is derived from all plant sources but most commonly sucrose comes from the sugar cane plant or sugar beets.
There are many sugar substitutes. Some are more desirable than others. There are some sweeteners that although are not considered to be natural it is thought that in general they do not cause a negative reaction when consumed.
