Can C15:0 slow the biological process of ageing?

Our bodies are made up of trillions of cells, and over time, those cells can become more vulnerable to damage and less efficient at doing their jobs. That’s when we may start to notice changes in our energy, resilience, and overall wellbeing.

But ageing isn’t inevitable without action. We can support our cells and help keep them healthier for longer.

Regular movement and a nutritious diet are an important foundation. But there’s growing interest in another piece of the puzzle: fatty acids. Certain fatty acids appear to play an important role in cellular health and may help protect against some of the changes associated with ageing. C15:0 is one of them.

Understanding what fatty acids are

Firstly, let’s look at fatty acids in general. When we digest food, our bodies break down fatty acids to be absorbed into the bloodstream. From there, dietary fatty acids do a lot of the significant work.

An important thing to note is that there are two basic kinds of dietary fatty acids, or dietary fats – unsaturated and saturated. A lot of dietary health advice has led us to believe that saturated fats are a health risk and should be avoided. However, scientific evidence supports the understanding that some can be beneficial.

Now let’s take a closer look at saturated fatty acids. Think of them like a train made of carbon atoms linked together in a straight chain. Every carbon on this train is completely saturated with hydrogen atoms. They are ‘even-chain’ or ‘odd-chain’ fatty acids, named for how many of the carbon atoms they carry. Key points to know are that all saturated fatty acids are not equal and the body breaks them down in different ways.

The point of focus here is one odd-chain saturated fatty acid mentioned earlier called pentadecanoic acid (C15:0), trace amounts of which are found in foods such as whole milk, beef and lamb fat, and specific types of fatty fish.

C15:0: A molecule worth knowing about

A substantial body of independent scientific and epidemiological research spanning several decades has documented C15:0’s cellular, and metabolic, supportive properties. Higher circulating C15:0 levels have been associated with support for cardiometabolic, liver, and immune health, as well as blood sugar balance and cardiovascular health. And surprisingly to some, it may even support healthy sleep, mood, and joints. Conversely, studies have supported that if there is insufficient C15:0 in our cells, they may undergo fragility and a form of cell death resulting in accelerated aging.

The dolphin breakthrough

The story behind C15:0 is a compelling one. It began in the 2010s with a veterinary epidemiologist, Dr Stephanie Venn-Watson, studying a cohort of retired navy dolphins in San Diego.

It’s noteworthy that Navy dolphins typically live around 20 years longer than dolphins in the wild. Some Navy dolphins have lived into their forties and fifties, at which point they have been observed to begin developing age-related, conditions like those seen in humans.

Documenting the dolphins’ health issues including cardiovascular health, Venn-Watson and her team noted that the healthier dolphins were fed a diet rich in fatty fish that corresponded to higher blood levels of C15:0. In contrast, the aging dolphins eating a diet lower in C15:0 was linked to an increase of conditions. When their diets switched to the fish containing higher levels of C150, their conditions remarkably stabilised.

The surprise

The research team was not anticipating this result. It had predicted the standout nutrient that was improving health outcomes in the dolphins was going to be omega 3 since they were eating fatty fish. Instead, they discovered an unfamiliar saturated fatty acid, the first one found in more than ninety years.

Translating to humans

This discovery was followed by extensive human population studies showing benefits of C15:0 on human populations. They made sense to researchers due to similarities between dolphins and humans. Both mammals have the potential for long life spans and developing age-related conditions, possess large and complex brains, and have sociability and intelligence.
